History of Clay Workshop and Lecture

Join us for an engaging 2-hour workshop and lecture designed for beginner to intermediate enthusiasts eager to explore the rich history and hands-on techniques of clay art. This immersive session combines practical clay-building exercises with a fascinating lecture on the evolution of clay usage across various cultures and eras.

5 Students per class
Materials Included:
5 lb of clay (pinch pot base and coil the rest)
Hand-building tools (participants are encouraged to bring their own)
Torch / Heat gun
Colored Slip
Underglaze
Process
1. Foundation Building: Using 1 lb of clay, each student will hand-build a pinch pot to serve as the base shape and foundation.
2. Coiling Technique: The remaining clay will be used to coil and build the rest of the pot’s structure.
3. Drying Process: We'll speed up the clay's drying process with a torch or heat gun.
4. Decorating: Once the clay reaches a stiffer stage, students will decorate, carve, and add colored slips to their creations.
5. Glazing: Students can choose up to three glaze colors for the interior of their pots. The exterior will be finished with a clear glaze to highlight details and colored slip/oxide.
Lecture Component
During the workshop, enjoy a 15-20 minute lecture covering:
- Primitive building techniques and cultural significance
- Contemporary uses of clay
- Insights into minerals, oxides, and firing techniques
This session will provide a historical context and technical understanding, enriching the hands-on experience.
